F.A.Q.

Here are some common questions. Please reach out if you have any more! We love talking about martial arts.

What is the best age to start training?

You can start at any age! Kids can start as young as 5 and adults can start at any age. Many have started well into their retirement.

Does learning to fight encourage violence?

Quite the opposite. We learn to fight so that we don’t have to. Those who wish to cause harm (kids or adults) tend to look for easy targets. As your skill grows, you will not present as an easy target and will learn ways to avoid confrontations.

What gear is needed?

For beginners, all you need is a gi (pronounced “gee”; Japanese uniform) and possibly sparring gear (padded helmet and gloves). You’ll get your first gi when you sign up and can pick up sparring gear from many different places. We may also have some you can use during class.

What is sparring?

Sparring is a ‘fight’ with very specific rules. All participants must wear padded gloves and helmet (shin and foot pads are also encouraged for advanced belts). All strikes must be above the belt and not to the face or back. Strikes should use minimal force. The goal is to demonstrate that you could have hit in a real scenario.

Do I need to spar?

Sparring is one component of martial arts and is encouraged to help develop timing. However, if there are health or other concerns, there are other training methods that can be used instead.

Is karate dangerous?

Safety is a top priority. The only thing you should leave with is fatigue from a good workout and some muscle soreness as you get stronger! However, as with any sport or physical activity, there is the risk of an occasional injury. We do our best to structure the class and the environment to make it as safe as possible. If you have specific concerns, speak to the instructor prior to class.

Who should train? Is it just for men & boys?

We welcome all ages, genders, races, and identities to train.
